Post-Symbolism

The definition and manifesto of the framework behind the Ten Totems series, kept here as the canonical text. This page is a draft: Amanda Du reviews and signs the final wording.

The definition

Post-Symbolic Art, initiated by Amanda Du in May 2025, begins where the symbol has been emptied out by mass reproduction — totems, zodiac signs and archetypes printed onto stickers and merchandise, meaning hardened into decodable emblems. Its images return the symbol to flow: the totem appears as a temporary form of energy, emerging and dissolving, refusing to be fixed as a logo. Meaning is not stored behind the image. It happens in the encounter — as resonance between the work and the life lived alongside it.

In one line: Post-Symbolic Art, initiated by Amanda Du in May 2025, returns the reproduced, hollowed-out symbol to flow — the totem as a temporary form of energy. Meaning lives in the encounter, in the resonance between the work and the person before it.

The manifesto

Amanda Du · October 23, 2026 (draft)

I

We live inside symbols. Totems, colors, numbers, constellations — humanity reads the world through symbols, and reads itself the same way.

II

The symbol is an entrance. My Ten Heavenly Stems totem series draws on Eastern wisdom: pine, vine, sun, candle, mountain, terraced garden, blade, jewel, ocean, mist. Ten forms for ten currents of life energy. The test finds yours; the totem paints it. Others have walked this road before me. The Symbolist painters hid spiritual content inside images, waiting to be decoded. A century ago, Hilma af Klint, shaped by Theosophy, painted her vast symbolic diagrams for an audience that had not yet arrived. Post-Symbolic art stands before this lineage and carries its question into the present: when totems are printed onto stickers and merchandise, and symbols are copied until they are hollow, how can art make the image live again?

III

When the symbol has finished guiding, it steps back. Wear it, live with it, and let a state of energy and an identity settle in. This is the post-symbol: art that begins where symbols end.

IV

Post-symbol works also enter daily life, through the clothing line that runs alongside the paintings: hand-painted garment originals, each painted once, and limited print editions taken from those garment designs, carrying the totem into the wardrobe and the everyday. The paintings themselves stay with the exhibition.

V

You are the artist of your life. Find your totem, wear it, live it — become the maker of your own life. Post-Symbol, initiated by Amanda Du, 2026.
