About the Artist

Albert Oehlen was born in Krefeld, Germany, in 1954 and studied at the Hochschule fuer bildende Kuenste Hamburg. He emerged from the German art scenes around Hamburg, Berlin, and Cologne alongside artists such as Martin Kippenberger, Werner Buettner, Georg Herold, and Markus Oehlen.

Oehlen is often discussed in relation to German Neo-Expressionism and bad painting, but his practice is more exacting than those labels suggest. He has repeatedly interrupted painting through restricted palettes, broken composition, computer-generated imagery, advertising fragments, tree structures, finger painting, and dense abstraction.

His major exhibitions include Albert Oehlen: Home and Garden at the New Museum in New York, a survey at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and Cows by the Water at Palazzo Grassi in Venice.
