About the Artist

Jordan Casteel was born in Denver in 1989 and is based in New York. She studied at Agnes Scott College and received an MFA from Yale School of Art.

Casteel paints large-scale portraits of people she encounters in her community, including students, neighbors, business owners, subway passengers, and street vendors. Her works are often based on photographs, then transformed through scale, color, and painterly adjustment.

Her first major museum exhibition, Jordan Casteel: Returning the Gaze, was presented by the Denver Art Museum in 2019. The New Museum later organized Jordan Casteel: Within Reach in New York. Her work is held in major museum collections and she is represented by Casey Kaplan.
