About the Artist
Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa in 1970 and moved to the United States as a child. She studied at Kalamazoo College and later received an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design.
Her paintings and works on paper layer architectural plans, maps, calligraphic marks, erasures, and gestural fields. The work reads cities, displacement, conflict, and social movement through abstraction.
Mehretu has received major museum attention, including a large survey organized with institutions such as LACMA and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her works are held by MoMA, Whitney, Guggenheim, Tate, LACMA, and other major museums.
