Katherine Bernhardt / 凯瑟琳·伯恩哈特
United States | b. 1975 | Based in St. Louis | Painting, works on paper
Katherine Bernhardt is known for loud, fast, pattern-driven paintings that turn consumer objects, cartoon figures, tropical animals, food, cigarettes, sneakers, and everyday symbols into all-over visual rhythm.

About the Artist
Katherine Bernhardt was born in Clayton, Missouri, in 1975 and is based in St. Louis. She studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the School of Visual Arts in New York.
Her work developed from fashion-model paintings into Moroccan rug references and then into large, brightly coloured pattern paintings filled with consumer and pop-cultural signs. The paintings often look casual, but the best ones depend on scale, colour pressure, repetition, and the speed of the image.
For collectors, Bernhardt is strongest when the painting feels excessive without becoming slack. A good work has rhythm and confidence; a weak one can collapse into decorative inventory.
凯瑟琳·伯恩哈特 1975 年出生于密苏里州 Clayton,现工作生活于圣路易斯。她曾就读于 School of the Art Institute of Chicago 和纽约 School of Visual Arts。
Why This Artist Matters
- Consumer image as pattern
Bernhardt treats objects less as still life and more as repeating graphic units. The painting works when the signs become rhythm, not when they remain a list.
- Colour and speed
Her best works need chromatic force and quick visual movement. The apparent looseness should feel intentional.
- Accessible but quality-sensitive
The market can be approachable compared with more speculative peers, but quality dispersion is visible. Subject, scale, and compositional energy matter.

Price context: Bernhardt remains a mid-career market with several entry points. Large strong paintings require more serious budgets; works on paper and prints can be more accessible. Avoid paying high prices for works where the motif is recognizable but the composition is weak.

What to Focus On
- Core work type
Start by comparing available works with Winter Waxed Amaryllis and Untitled. The closer a work is to the artist's recognized image or object logic, the more seriously it should be considered.
- Specific visual strength
Within painting, drawing, mixed media, avoid weak examples that only repeat the surface look. The work should carry composition, material conviction, and enough presence to justify its price tier.
- Work history and market context
Study exhibition history, publication record, provenance, condition, edition structure where relevant, and recent comparable results.

Art Spirit Observation
For Bernhardt, Art Spirit would buy rhythm rather than motif. Pink Panther, cigarettes, bananas, or sneakers are only useful when the painting has speed, pressure, and a convincing all-over structure.
收藏 Bernhardt,艺灵 会买节奏,重点也买母题。粉红豹、香烟、香蕉或球鞋只有在画面具备速度、压力和完整铺陈结构时才有意义。
