About the Artist
Kerry James Marshall was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955 and lives and works in Chicago. He studied at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles.
Marshall's practice addresses the absence of Black figures in Western art history by placing Black subjects at the center of painting, history, domestic life, landscape, leisure, and cultural memory.
His career spans more than five decades. Major exhibitions include Mastry, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and traveling to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOCA Los Angeles, as well as The Histories at the Royal Academy of Arts. His work is held by major museums internationally.
