Salman Toor
About the Artist
Salman Toor was born in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1983 and lives and works in New York. He studied painting and drawing at Ohio Wesleyan University, receiving his BA in 2006, and later received an MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2009.
Toor is known for small and mid-scale figurative paintings that stage the lives of imagined young brown queer men across domestic interiors, bars, parties, airports, streets, and transitional spaces between New York and South Asia. His work often uses loose academic technique, quick brushwork, theatrical lighting, and a recurring green tonality to create scenes that feel intimate, social, vulnerable, and slightly unstable.
A key institutional moment came with Salman Toor: How Will I Know at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2020-2021, his first museum solo exhibition. The exhibition framed his paintings around public and private vulnerability, community, and queer diasporic identity. In 2022, the Baltimore Museum of Art organized Salman Toor: No Ordinary Love, which traveled to the Tampa Museum of Art, Honolulu Museum of Art, and Rose Art Museum.
His work has entered major public collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, National Gallery of Art, Walker Art Center, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Tate, the Courtauld Gallery, the British Museum, Moderna Museet, Pinault Collection, M+, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, among others. He is represented by Luhring Augustine.
2020 至 2021 年,Whitney Museum of American Art 为其举办 Salman Toor: How Will I Know,这是他首次博物馆个展,也是其机构位置形成的重要节点。 2022 年,Baltimore Museum of Art 组织 Salman Toor: No Ordinary Love,之后巡展至 Tampa Museum of Art、Honolulu Museum of Art 和 Rose Art Museum。
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum、Metropolitan Museum of Art、Whitney Museum of American Art、National Gallery of Art、Walker Art Center、Museum of Fine Arts Houston、Tate、Courtauld Gallery、British Museum、Moderna Museet、Pinault Collection、M+、Kiran Nadar Museum of Art
Why This Artist Matters
- A distinct language of queer diasporic figuration
Toor gives contemporary figurative painting a specific emotional and cultural field: brown queer subjects moving through intimacy, surveillance, friendship, performance, and displacement. The work is readable without becoming simple, which is important for long-term cultural relevance.
- Strong institutional acceleration
The Whitney solo exhibition, the Baltimore Museum of Art exhibition and its museum tour, Frick dialogue project, Venice Biennale inclusion, and major museum collections give Toor a level of institutional support unusual for an artist still in a relatively young market phase.
- A fast-forming collector market
The market has developed quickly around paintings with strong narrative, recognizable green tonality, and exhibition history. This creates opportunity, but also requires discipline around quality, scale, subject, provenance, and price level.

What to Focus On
- Major paintings from 2019 onward
The strongest opportunities are paintings where subject, composition, green tonality, and psychological tension are all present. Works connected to museum exhibitions or important gallery shows deserve closer review.
- Narrative density
Prioritize works that carry more than a single figure or decorative mood. Scenes involving social interaction, border spaces, nightlife, domestic intimacy, or art-historical dialogue tend to show the practice more fully.
- Market discipline
Because the market developed quickly, price should be tested against scale, medium, date, exhibition history, and comparable auction or private-sale evidence.

Art Spirit Observation
Toor is strongest when everyday scenes carry real psychological pressure: a bar, dinner table, airport, cab, or bedroom where the figures are held together by glances, distance, awkwardness, desire, or unease. We would prioritize paintings from the period when the green palette, queer social space, and South Asian diasporic narrative are fully working together. Works on paper can be a good entry point, but sketch-like pieces with thin narrative content should not be priced like major paintings.
